They control weighing machine remotely!
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) presented four members before media who were engaged in tampering weighing machines and remotely controlling the machines with the intention of cheating the customers by giving less while showing more in the machine and charging thereby.
In view of the complaints of the victimized businessmen, Motijheel Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) recently raided Kaptan Bazar in the capital and arrested the mastermind of this gang, Sirajul Islam alias Sajib (33), Monir (35), Md. Liton (38) and Md. Alauddin Khan (28).
At the time of arrest, five digital weighing machines, seven remote controls and various tools for manipulating weighing machines, including Soldering iron, were seized from them.
Controlling weighing machine remotely is a novel and new type of fraud, informed the detectives. For a long time, traders who came to wholesale markets of the capital to sell various products including poultry from different parts of the country were being cheated by the gang.
DMP Additional Commissioner (Detective) Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid gave this information while talking to reporters at his office on Minto Road in the capital on Sunday afternoon.
He said, “We have arrested a new type of criminal gang. Before this, we only heard that many people came to sell products wholesale and got average weight. Many times, customers also complained like this.
Later, Motijheel Division of DB started working on such allegations and arrested them red-handed.
Mohammad Haroon-Ur-Rashid said, “The month of Ramadan is going on. Eid ahead. Law and order forces including DB are working to stabilize commodity prices. The market is fairly under control. We went to the expedition and saw that the wholesale markets of Dhaka are being given less weight. We raided and arrested four members of the gang. While investigating, we found that this was a new type of fraud.
The detective chief said, “Sajib is a television mechanic by profession. He manipulates digital weighing machines by collecting special circuits and remotes online. As a result, he can reduce the weight of 200 kg product as he wills through remote control. He is making huge sums of money by selling them to various unscrupulous traders. Mechanic Sajib sells each machine to dishonest traders for 70 to 80 thousand taka. The code word for losing weight to this gang is 'gapsi'. This means reduce the weight. These machines were used by unscrupulous wholesale chicken or meat sellers in Kaptan Bazar to cheat people for a long time. But their target is new product sellers and wholesale buyers.”
“But they did not cheat the old wholesale buyers. Claiming the product is underweight is a form of theft. Those who sell this equipment. We will also question the sellers whether they are aware of the fraud or not.” He said.
When asked about the prevention of price manipulation in the market during Ramadan, he said, "Detective police are working in the field regarding price manipulation of products. Besides, the Directorate of Consumer Affairs is working in the field along with law and order forces. If there is a complaint of irregularities anywhere, the detective police is taking action against those involved.
